Recent (and oft repeated) messages here have discussed the crime
situation in New York City. Many contributors have based their opinions
on cliches and old news. The current issue of Forbes magazine has its
annual report of "Best Places for Business", which includes the crime
rate, for 150 metro regions in the US.
The national average is 4434 criminal incidents per 100,000 annually;
New York City's rate is 2973 per 100,000, good enough for 20th place
overall. The adjacent Long Island region is best in the nation at 1968
and New Jersy adds two more metros in the top four. Kind of puts the
lie to all those "hellhole" stories.
With all categories calculated, including culture and leisure and cost
of living and doing business the best place to do business is Madison,
Wisconsin; second is Raleigh-Durham, NC; third is Austin, TX. NYC takes
position number 100 overall.
