I can't speak for all places. I've been to Key West several times as
well as Ft. Lauderdale. The sensible folks don't bother having a lawn,
just colored stones. I've walked about at night in both Key West and
Ft. Lauderdale. I didn't see any snakes or gaiters. In Key West I did
see lots of cats, wild chickens and geckos. Cats like to play with and
kill geckos. Still there seem to be enough of them for one to
occasionally fall out of a tree onto a tourist, much to the amusement of
the locals. :-) Of the two places I've been to, Ft. Lauderdale may be
more affordable, depending on neighborhood.
