Homeless people won't bother you; just simply ignore their request for
some change, look straight ahead, and keep walking, they'll leave you
alone. I work in that area and never had a problem.
Downtown L.A. is the most real part of the city. The far
Westside/Santa Monica hotels all seem to have dumb beach-like feel,
they cater to the dumb tourist ie. he/she who does nothing on vacation
but lounge on the beach for a week.
From downtown, you can take the MetroLink or subway to several places
of interest. Of course, there are endless bus lines originating in
downtown which will take you just about anywhere in greater L.A.
