I have read many articles on traveling to Alaska- and have found many
informative ones, but having recently talked to a Soldier who has
been Stationed at Ft Wainwright ( Fairbanks) 3 times and is returning
again for a 4th tour of duty, leads me to believe that the days of bad
roads for 100's of miles is the thing of the past. He has stated that
there are segments of road repair in the Spring and early Summer that
entail driving across rocky roads, but the majority of the Highway is
just like the highway in the lower 48, (Two lane), some places winding
and narrow. Iasked him how long it takes him to travel from Wainwright
to the Canadian border at Montana ( 5days) and thats not pushing it.
He stated that he had pushed the trip before and had made Indiana in 5
days. ( He drives a mid sized Toyota car). Never had a flat tire or
chipped windshield, but does recommend bra and headlight protectors.
The worse gravel road that he has driven on is the Denali Highway, he
said that it is in a terrible state of repair. He stated that a friend
of his driving a Chevy Tailblazer busted a right front axle on it last
year. ( He doesn't recommend driving that highway even with a 4 wheel
drive) at 15 mile an hour.
I myself I'm driving a Pontiac Montana up to Bellingham WA. and
catching a Alaskan Ferry to Haines, then overland to Fairbanks to
visit brother ( who has lived and travelled all over Alaska for the
past 30 years), onto Denali NP. then return leg to White Horse, and BC,
Alberta. Jasper, Banaff, Montana. So my visit will be for at least
2months.
