Hello, Xavier.
In article you write:

It'll be tight, but you can do Vegas, LA, and SF and some stuff in between
in that time. Do you need to return to Los Angeles because an "open jaw"
trip from Spain to California would be much more expensive? Or is it because
you want to see one part of California northbound and another southbound?
>Since I'm fond of astronomy, I would like to visit the JPL at Pasadena or

See http://www.mtwilson.edu/ and http://www.mwoa.org/ for information
about Mount Wilson. Palomar is farther away (it's in San Diego County),
but here's where you can get more info:
http://www.astro.caltech.edu/observatories/palomar/
And by the way, don't forget the historic Lick Observatory on Mount
Hamilton near San Jose, if you pass by there on your way to SF:
http://www.ucolick.org/
(There are also some other excellent observatories available to
the public at various colleges and science museums in the Bay
Area, but I gather that you're after the big famous ones.)
>Drive to San Francisco
Are you planning for this to be a quick drive up Interstate 5,
with no stops for sightseeting?
>- San Francisco.
>Visit the city and sorrounding areas.
>I've been told that this is the best part of the travel, especially the
>city, coast and valleys.
Those of us who live in the Bay Area would agree. :-)
>Visit all the Spanish missions and trails.
>Drive to L.A following the coast.
The Spanish missions range from San Diego to Sonoma, so if you
want to see all of those, you'll (a) need to allow more time to
work your way north or south, and (b) need to take a route other
than I-5 or the coast. They are (to oversimplify) generally near
I-5 in southern California, then near Hwy 101 after you get north
of Los Angeles. Hwy 101 is a pleasant drive; more scenic than I-5,
although nowhere near as pretty as Hwy 1 along the coast.
Here's a link to more information about the missions:
