I recall reading that, if all flights are on the same airline, they are
responsible for getting her to her destination within 24 hrs of her
original arrival time, and if they do not, liable for the price of her
ticket. However, IME, most airline agents will attempt to get her
there ASAP, even if it means putting her on a competing airline.
In 1991, my wife and I booked a trip on Delta from Gainesville, Fla.
to Rome (Italy) via Orlando and NYC. The Gainesville-Orlando leg
was cancelled at the last minute and the frazzled ticket agent put us
on the next flight out to Atlanta!
Their agent in Atlanta put us on a flight to Frankfurt, Germany, and
hence on a Lufthansa flight to Rome, and we arrived only 2 hrs late.
Fortuitously, we had not checked any luggage... no telling where
that would have gone. [R]
