> a) when driving does one always give way to the right?
The general answer would be that if you want to make a
left turn (which would cause you to cross in front of the
oncoming traffic), give the right of way to the oncoming
traffic, regardless of whether the oncoming cars are
going straight through the intersection or plan to turn right.
>b) when filling up with petrol (gas) at a service station
>are they usually self-serve as over here...
Yes, the vast majority of service stations are self-service.
Usually you insert a credit card into the pump before you
begin pumping your gas, or you can pay the attendant after
you're done filling your tank. (Occasionally there will be a
sign on the pump saying that you must pay first.)
> c) tipping - is this very common/expected?
The whole subject of tipping is a good way to start
arguements. :) But in general, most folks tip around
15% to 20% to their waiter in a restaurant, and around
the same for taxi drivers; around $1 a bag if someone
carries your suitcases at the hotel, $1 to the person who
hails a cab for you.
Tipping maids is more variable. In large cities (New York,
Chicago, etc.) it seems to be expected; in smaller cities
it's less common. A friend of mine is a housekeeper at
a nice hotel in Ohio and says that while the vast majority
of their guests leave tips in the hotel's restaurant, only
about 1/3 leave tips for the maids. But I think the
practice is becoming more common.
Like I said, do a Google search for more info and other
opinions.
