Its first come first serve unless you specifically request
prior seat assignments. As long as you have paid for
a seat for you son as a child fare it should be possible
to get seats together. The seats are usually assigned
by the car attendant

are no accessible food outlets at most stations. I'd recommend
bringing a small cooler and your own food
