As much as I dislike discouraging anyone, I have to say that I think
traveling Amtrak overnight in coach with a small child is a VERY bad
idea. My husband and I have decided, in fact, that we will never take
an overnight trip on Amtrak again unless we purchase sleeping
accommodations.

Train seats are admittedly larger than plane seats, but my husband (at
6'2") could not get into a comfortable enough position for sleep. Add
to that the general "cattle car" condition of a crowded Amtrak train.
The snores, conversations and body odors of strangers are not conducive
to sleep. And the public bathrooms quickly become unsanitary messes.
There is no way I would feel good about changing a two-year old in these
circumstances.

If this is your only alternative for travel at that time of year, I
guess you can tough it out. But don't expect anything like a fun,
leisurely trip. Get sleeping accommodations if you can possibly afford
them. That will make the trip enjoyable, as long as you're not
expecting to arrive on time.
