Let me just add one observation from my own experience, since OP is travelling
as a group of three...they'll move heaven and earth at mealtimes to make sure
there are four people at each dining-car table...since I travelled alone, I was
assured of an ever-changing set of meal companions...(I still remember an
elderly Russian man at breakfast who was intensely amused by my efforts to order
iced tea)....

In Alice's case, there will always be one casual acquaintance sharing a table
with her family, unless they decide to eat at separate times....r
