If it were me, and I was focused on interesting places in the Eastern
& Mid-West part of the country, then I'd head South from NYC to:

-- Hershey (chocolate) and Gettysburg (civil war), Pennsylvania
-- Washington, DC.
All the Smithsonian Museums and the memorials & monuments
on the Mall -- Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, Roosevelt, Korean
& Vietnam Wars, and WWII, are all free of charge.
-- Williamsburg, Virginia (colonial district)
-- Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (seashore)
-- Charleston, South Carolina, and/or Savannah, Georgia (historic)
-- St. Augustine, Florida (oldest city in US)
-- Orlando, Florida (theme parks)

Then West to New Orleans, Louisiana (French Quarter), and then
Memphis, Tennessee (Graceland); St. Louis, Missouri (the Arch),
and Chicago from there.

Depending on how much time you want to spend in any one place,
this should be do-able in a month. [R]
