Woody,

A B&B in the US follows a range of types. Many are in historic
buildings over 100 years old, or have a great view of some point of
interest or are close to it. They can be furnished with antiques and
adhere to the period of the house in decor or be totally modern inside
with data ports and satellite/cable tv. If they are billed as a Bed and
Breakfast your room rate includes some kind of breakfast which can range
from coffee and donuts to an expanded breakfast with hot items like make
your own Belgian Waffles. As with hotels or motels the closer to the
attraction the higher the room rate.

Here is a tip of the iceberg looksee at some lodging options along the
Jersey Shore but not all:
http://www.virtualnjshore.com/hotels.html

Here is one B&B in Ocean Grove http://www.centralavehouse.com/

Here is one in Spring Lake
http://www.whitelilac.com/rates_and_reservations/index.html

It should be noted if all you want is a place to rest your head for a
few nights the savings are found in Ocean Grove. The average room rate
in any other seaside resort town worth visiting starts at $169 and goes
to $300 during season. http://www.oceangrovenj.com/

Here are some links on Lavallette. It's about 2 hours 45 minutes from
New York City depending on traffic. http://www.ohwy.com/nj/l/lavallet.htm

This one lists lodging with a 12 mi approx. proximity to NJ Garden State
Parkway Exits. Not all listings have web pages, but it should give you
a better lay of the land. As you travel north on the GSP Exit numbers
go up and go down as you travel south. http://www.exit98.com/lodgeall.htm

If you can locate a web page for a place you are considering, check it
out. Most will spell out the amenities, forms of payment accepted,
etc. Here is a shortcut you can use with US Google to find more local
info about shore towns. On your browsers location/navigation line enter
without quotes, or (): "local.google.com/town, state, or zipcode
(keyword)" If it has a web page it will help you hone in on it.

If you are just making an excursion to New York and won't need the car
there. You can park the car in Bay Head and take the NJ Coast Line into
NYC. With only a few exceptions the train stops at every stop and is
rather slow. Scenery goes from sea views to industrial. Still if you
catch an early train it beats sitting in summer shore traffic.

NJ Shore traffic fluctuates during the day. Year round on weekdays
after work (4 - 8) it flows south as many folks now commute north to
work during the day on weekdays. In the summer on Fri-Sat add to this
folks traveling south to check-in for vacation rentals (3:00 pm onward
'til 11:00 pm) On Sundays those same folks check out at 11:00 am, many
opt to keep their stuff in the car and have one more day at the beach.
So the northern swell doesn't really happen until after 6:00 pm or so.
Then we're back to weekdays with the morning rush north for the
commuters from the south.

There are ways to bypass much of this. If you drive listen to 101.5 FM
or one of the other local radio stations for traffic reports. If you
make friends with a local he/she may tell you about back roads and
alternate routes that few know about. I know one which involves SRt.
18 and SRt 9. It'll take you from Wall Township to Sayerville bypassing
many of the exits on the GSP where things clog up.

Wherever you stay, have a good one.
