I have a friend who wants a car for a week in Fort Lauderdale over
Christmas. The major companies are pricing in the upper $500 to $600 range
for a compact! Finally he realized that if he takes a cab downtown he can
rent from a major at a price in the upper $300;s.

www.airline-network.co.uk and others (including Opodo--or German companies
such as Avigo) are in the upper $200's for those same dates (!) BUT if you
look at the fine print, they specify that if you show up with a U.S.
driver's license the deal is off. What's more the U.K. sites specify that
it must be a U.K. driver's license, not a U.S. or international license.
