Obviously, this would have to be during normal business hours, or more
specifically, the hours kept by B&H, which means no Saturdays or Friday
afternoons. B&H is walking distance from Penn Station, so you're best
bet is to take the airport tram to the EWR NJ Transit station and catch
the Airtrain in to Penn Station. Count on a minimum of 45 minutes from
the time you pass out of the gate area to the time you arrive at Penn
Station - assuming all of the schedules line up just right, it still
takes a little time to get from the terminal to the NJ Transit station.
Assuming you know you're way around Penn Station, it's about a 5-10
minute walk from the station to B&H. Also figure on it taking 5-15
minutes for you to find and buy the camera lens you need. When you
return, allow about 30 minutes extra to get through security. So, in
all, this whole trip can be done in about 2 and a half hours - throw in
another hour just for coningency's sake and you're all set within your
4 hour limit. And yes, it is safe and may involve some pretty good
exercise.
