Now that you think you folks have all THAT cleared up....
In most of the Western United States, vast portions of the land *is*
public property. In most cases (though there are exceptions) it is
perfectly legal to camp there. It's called *camping at large* or
*dispersed camping.* This applies to most all BLM lands, and the
majority of National Forest land. We use these all the time because
they are more private, cleaner, and quieter. It takes little effort to
find these places, and they are free.
