Yes, the airlines were deregulated. This resulted in competition.
The airlines realized that the majority of travellers want lower
fares. Therefore, they lowered fares, but they also had to cut
services in order to stay in business. People want lower fares, and
the result is less service. Therefore people are getting what they
want and what they paid for.

As an example, Delta had $785million in operating loss last year.
They transported approximately 125 million passengers. So if everyone
had pad $10 more per ticket, they would have had profit of almost a
half a billion dollars. If everyone paid $20 more per ticket, they
would have had profit of almost $1.75 billion. If your company made
$1.75 billion last year, would you be looking for cuts that you knew
your customers would not like?
