The key problem is that most of Big Sur plunges (almost literally) into the
ocean such that headlands constitute much of it. There are a few places
where you indeed can get out and wet your toes, but unless looking out over
the ocean, be prepared to look more up than out.

Point Lobos. While not in Big Sur proper, it is a lovely place. Site of
many Edward Weston images. The mid and south sections offer access to the
ocean. Unusual eroded flat rock formations captured by Weston back in the
1920's and 1930's at Weston Beach that look unchanged from those he
photographed. In the northern section...except for Whalers Cove...you'll
find yourself high above the water amidst the trees.

Garrapata State Beach. At the northern end of Big Sur, north of the Big Sur
lighthouse.

Pfeiffer Beach. Tough to find. Turnoff from hwy 1 is south of Nephente.
One of the more memorable scenes from *The Sandpiper* (Richard Burton,
Elizabeth Taylor...title song, "The Shadow of your Smile") was filmed here.

Sand Dollar beach. Nice. Extra fee.

Limekiln Beach. At Limekiln State Park. The falls are by far the more
spectacular sight.

Jade Beach. Be careful as you make you way down the steep trail. If you're
luck, you'll find some genuine jade amongst all those other pebbles...or so
they say!

A couple of unnamed places between Ragged Point and Jade Beach where hwy 1
goes down almost to sea level.
