To get to New York cheaply and conveniently, take a Septa train to
Trenton and then switch to NJ Transit. You can buy a ticket for the
whole trip from Septa (or, in the other direction, from NJ Transit).
It's a lot cheaper than Amtrak, although slower, as the trains stop in
nearly every station. In Philadephia, the Septa trains leave from
Market East, Suburban and 30th Street stations. In New York the train
arrives at Penn Station. Amtrak trains leave from 30th Street station
only, and arrive at Penn Station.
Be careful, there is also a Penn Station in Newark (NJ), which both
Amtrak and NJ Transit trains stop at. Since the station name is
identical and Newark sounds a bit like New York, it can be easy to
make a mistake.
