I have a 1966 official California highway map put out by the
state department of Public Works (apparently CalTrans was in the
future). It has a nice aerial photo of "the new Santa Monica
Freeway".

The map shows US-50 as following I-580 from the Bay Bridge to
Castro Valley and proceeding east along what is now the I-580
alignment passing by a rather small village of Dublin and also by
Livermore into the Central Valley. My 1949 AAA (actually, ACSC)
US map indicates US-50 went to Manteca and doubled as US-99 north
to Sacramento.

The 1949 map shows US-40 roughly following the alignment of
current I-80 from SF to Sacto.

When we drove US-50 east in the late 1960s we were intending to
take US-99 south to LA we discovered we connected to I-5, but it
only went as far south as Los Banos.
