Why would you want a car for the 50 mile trip from San Jose to
San Francisco? A car in San Francisco is a liability, and you can
take CalTrain between the two cities.

Not a lot. The Tech Museum. Winchester House. The Egyptian Museum
(recommended). You can use it as a base for going to Santa Cruz.

San Jose is a nice place to live but you wouldn't want to visit
there.

If you do drive from San Jose to SF, use I-280, not US-101. Much
more scenic and basically follows the San Andreas Fault's rift
valley.
