The main thing to watch for is the cost of supplementary insurance.
Rental cars in the US come with minimal insurance , essentially
third party only. You can buy insurance at the rental desk
but the cost is exorbitant, at least $25 per day !

Get some quotes from UK travel agents (I'm guessing you
are a Brit) such as Travelocity , Expedia and Holiday Autos.
Their rates typically include all the insurance you need.

Its a residential/business area and not worth spending vacation time in.
You'd be MUCH better off spending the time in Yosemite NP
or north of SF in Marin County
