Granville Island has a public market, with the usual produce, meat,
baked goods, fast food, flowers and gifts. There is much more to see
there than the market (great restaurants like Bridges overlooking the
water and other unique shops).
Other fun stuff:
The Vancouver Aquarium and Capilano Suspension Bridge are musts for
tourists. I do them all the time and I live here! I also bring out of
towners there.
The sea bus across the Burrard Inlet to North Vancouver also leads to a
public market similar to Granville Island. The short 15 min. ferry
ride is fun and cheap!
I wouldn't bother going to whistler. Unless you are going for a ski
holiday in the winter or a golf/biking/hiking holiday in the summer,
it's not worth the drive up there. Don't get me wrong - it's a great
time, but not if you only have 4 days in Vancouver.
A more worthy all-day-excursion as others have suggested is Victoria.
You can take the ferry, sea plane or helicoptor ride. The ferry is
very cheap if you walk on, but then you need bus transportation to/from
the ferry terminal from your Vancouver hotel and also to/from the ferry
terminal at Swartz Bay (which is a good 1/2 hour from downtown
Victoria). For a day trip, it makes more sense to pay the extra $$$ to
go straight from downtown to downtown via air travel. The seaplane
terminal and helipad are both very close to your hotel (waterfront).
Very convenient. Victoria is a great day trip with tons to do (if you
go, you MUST to afternoon tea at the Empress!).
Stanley Park is worthly of a tour around the seawall (walk, bike or
rollerblade), and that is where the Acquarium is located.
It is usually very wet in the spring (but alas, the sun does come out
in Vancouver, so don't get too sad), but don't let it spoil your fun.
Bring a waterproof jacket and get out there and enjoy your stay!
Enjoy your visit!
