I agree with punk-tilous. Usually when I visit the western US I stop
in a Best Western motel along the way and pick up their book listing US
motels. This should aid you in estimating the number of other motels
at a destination and will also give you an idea of what they will cost.
If you will arrive late at your destination or suspect that motels
there will be full, you can stop at any other Best Western Motel and
they can make the same day reservation for you. There are also other
chains, but Best Western will probably have the most motels in the most
cities.
