You don't actually need to stay in San Jose the whole time, right?
You could stay downtown for a day or two and check out the Tech
Museum of Innovation and the Children's Discovery Museum (don't
laugh; I liked it better than the Tech :-)), but I'd suggest
you move base to San Francisco for most of your trip. You can
get there via the train or bus.
