The VIA passenger takes the CNR line in this area. You should go to the

P.S. As you travel west, the flat land starts about an hour east of
Winnipeg. First the "shield" and it's rock disappears, then about a half
hour before Winnipeg most of the trees go, then you go down the eastern
"beach" of glacial Lake Agassiz and you leave all the trees behind and
enter the prairie. Pretty flat until the foothills - not all grassland
though......
