For what it's worth, I've always liked Clearwater Beach for its resemblance
to a 'real' beach town. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, and it's
much easier to walk around than to drive. Perhaps your friends are thinking
of the town of Clearwater itself, which is not really a resort area.
