All good points. The Mammoth Lakes area has a number of scenic
attractions, and if you're going to be staying there for a few days, by
all means rent a condo and stay there. But if you're really just
trying to get to Yosemite [and you don't have time budgeted to see
Devil's Postpile, to take the very scenic hike from the Mammoth Lakes
area down to Red's Meadow, don't have time to take in Inyo Craters,
don't have time to hike to Shadow Lake or Thousand Islands Lake, or
otherwise take in Mount Ritter and Banner Peak, etc], then going to
Mammoth Lakes is a detour off of 395. Even if it's just a twenty
minutes round-trip detour, it's still twenty minutes that don't get you
any closer to Yosemite.

At the very least, I'd compare rates. If I could find something
cheaper in Lee Vining or Bishop, at the very least, I'd take those.
I'd also consider Independence and Lone Pine, depending on how I built
my itinerary and what time I thought I'd get to each of those
locations.

I think for either Mono Lake or Bodie, you'll going to want to get out
of your car and walk amongst the tufa towers or ghost town streets,
respectively.
