Personally, a few minutes off the road is worth it to me to have
some better dining options. Finding good food is one of the trickiest
parts of road trips, and Mammoth Lakes has some pretty good
restaurants. Actually, the best restaurant in that stretch of the
Eastern Sierra is at Convict Lake, and it's an even shorter drive
off of US-395. The Mono Inn, just north of Lee Vining, is also a
good choice for food.
