My favorite places to visit in California are Mt. Lassen NP and Lava

hundreds of lava tube caves that can be explored, some with ice

You can rhen go up US-97 through central Oregon just on the east side
of the volcanic Cascade range. Crater Lake NP is easily accessible by
this route. There are a number of interesting volcanic features along
this route such as an easily accessible cinder cone and casts of trees
that were surrounded by the molten lava. Another nice thing about this
route is that you`re not on an interstate highway.
I would recommend doing the opposite. You have to make a conscious
effort to visit Crater Lakes and Lava Beds. If rushed for time at the
end of the trip they would easily be sacrificed for speed. On the
other hand, I believe that it makes more sense to sacrifice some of the
coastline if in a rush.
