Depends on what you like. Biloxi = casinos, brown sand beaches on the
sound (barrier islands offshore), Jefferson Davis' retirement house (not
the typical grand plantation-style house though). Gulf Shores = sugar
white powdery sand, beach resort, directly facing the Gulf itself. Like
Dan says, if neither interests you, take a pass. You may as well see
the ocean if you've driven this far and you're that close; you can see
the bay at Mobile, at least.

Dan mentioned the civil rights musem in Birmingham. There's also one in
Memphis at the old Lorraine Motel (where M. L. King was killed). Your
mother will want to walk through Lansky's in the Peabody Hotel. Elvis
bought his suits from Lansky's, although not at that location.
