I thought the big ball of twine in Darwin was a waste of time, even
though it was free and sorta on the way to where I was going. On the
other hand, for other "white trash tour" sites, I hear the Spam Museum
is pretty good.

For the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, I think the Minnesota Sculpture
Garden is at the top of my list. There is a park across the way which
has a playground. Also, Dayton's Bluff offers a good view of St. Paul
and the Mississippi River (and there is also a playground in the area).
I didn't get a chance to visit it last year, but one other place that
was recommended to me was the basilica, supposedly being the only
"true" basilica in the US, whatever that means - somehow, I doubt the
kids would care much. One thing they might be interested in is a
children's theatre company in Minneapolis that puts on shows over the
summer (and throughout the year?). They might also be old enough to
appreciate seeing Garrison Keilor's Prairie Home Companion. Otherwise,
it's the flour mill, the falls, the Mall of America (which really does
have plenty to entertain kids), and a terrific park system.

Getting out of town a ways, if your kids like the Mall of America, then
they'll probably also like Wisconsin Dells. If they like canoeing and
such, a longer trip up north to Voyageurs might not be a bad idea. My
mother also used to speak fondly of going to Lake Itasca (the
Mississippi River source) as a child.

Anyhow, just some thoughts. I don't live there and I'm sure there are
some locals who can give you even better advice.
