I haven't been to the Big Island, but Kauai has some wonderful hiking,
especially the Na Pali trail on the northwest side of the island.

I worked for a month in Hawaii, and although I hadn't been
particularly excited about going there, as I'm not a beach person, I
found Honolulu very interesting. However, I don't remember much night
life. There are some excellent modestly priced restaurants, especially
Thai and Vietnamese. There are also some very interesting museums and
a botanical garden that are worth seeing. When I was there (over ten
years ago) there was a "beach bus" that made a circuit of beaches. You
could hop off and on. Some of the beaches on the east and northeast
coasts were practically empty and very beautiful.
However, the museums, botanical gardens and beaches are all best seen
in the daytime.
