For non-tourist trap things...
...here are some suggestions... take a bus and spend a day at Hanauma
beach. bring a blanket, and supplies for the day - great snorkeling
there and you can rent inexpensive equipment. BEAUTIFUL

rent a car and drive around the island with stops at places like.. Pali
lookout, Valley of the Temples, Dole Plantation (tourist trap but fun),
The NORTH SHORE BEACHES - spend a few hours watching the great surfers, ...

Climb, (walk up) Diamondhead.

AND you do not have to take expensive tours to places on Oahu. The bus
system is great and can take you almost everywhere.

==============================================
For a second Island, if you like hiking and nature - the Big Island has
a lot to offer. (renting a car is necessary here) There are a lot of
beautiful beaches on the island but most are surrounded by large resort
complexes. The public is allowed in but you have to drive through their
gate system to get a pass, then park and walk to the beach. Once there
they are beautiful but it is a bit of a hassle. Hapuna(sp?) beach is
still open and although not as clean as it once was, still nice. Same
for Spencer Beach. Snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay just south of Kona is
crowded but great. Again, no paid tour is required to enjoy it with
rentals available.

Take a hike through Waipio Valley - drive to Kamuela and ask the locals
where the starting parking lot is.

The National Botanical Gardens on the way to Hilo ($15 but well worth
the cost) ... walk to Akaka(sp?) Falls, Drive up to Kilauea volcano and
hike through the lava fields... magnificent. Visit the Mona Loa nut
plantation... Kona coffee plantations... Black Sand beach ... Ascend
Mona Kea to the snow fields (well, maybe no snow in July) and the
Observatories... Drive and park your car then backpack and walk over the
lava fields to Makalawena Beach (State Park?) A little-known deserted
tropical beach paradise...

[And if you want an experienced guide I will escort you just for the
cost of the airfare. LOL!!]
