You can hike at Volacanoes National Park on Big Island too. At the end of
Crater Rim Drive, is large lava field. If you hike through the lava field
you can reach an area where you can see active lava safely. The hike takes
about 3 - 4 hours.

Perhaps the OP could fly between the islands? Couple days on Big Island and
another couple days on Maui? Maui has great snorkeling.
