We haven't made such "difficult" flights so far. In your opinion, is it
possible and safe to order the tickets from BWI etc to SLC by the
internet and, when arriving on a bargain flight from Europe to BWI, get
the tickets, and continue the journey to SLC without having to
wait/sleep in BWI?
I think this scenario would be cheaper than ordering a whole flight
from an air company (i.e. arranging both Europe-US and BWI-SLC tickets
for you) but more nervous.

Yes, we have ruled out Denver, especially when you wrote about true
mileage of the "canyon run" down to the Grand Canyon.
With regards to gas, I presume the $2 you mention is the price per
gallon, i.e. four liters. In Lithuania gas is over $1 per liter, i.e.
over $4 per gallon.
So the US is still pretty much a "gas heaven" to us :) BTW, the current
dollar-euro ratio makes gas seem even cheaper to us.

I used to multiply by 1.6 because 1.8 is a nautical mile... So is a
mile in the US always 1.8? But Mark Brader wrote in this topic that
55mph is 90 km/h, i.e. one mile is 1.6 kilometers.
Anyway, 800 km one-way is a lot but the 120km/h speed is promising. I
also think an average driver wouldn't physically be able to maintain
120km/h seeing a straight highway in front of him, with no cars and
police till the horizon :P
And what is the recommended route to visit the best natural
destinations? A special trip two-day trip to the Grand Canyon, then
back to SLC, then separate trips to the nearer parks like Arches, or a
long all-around trip? (the latter would be less preferable)
