It's the same in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, all of which, like
Toronto, have large Chinese communities.

The dumpy-looking Chinese restaurants are frequently the best.
Traditionally, in China, ambience was the least important part of the
restaurant experience -- fresh, quality food preparation was everything. As
a rule, I avoid "Chinatown" restaurants because they cater to tourists.
Here in San Francisco, the best Chinese restaurants are well away from the
Chinatown area.
