I'll let the Colorado experts tell you whether this itinerary is
feasible in May, but several years ago, a friend and I had a lovely
trip in July doing this route:

Denver
Colorado Springs (Pike's Peak, AF Academy, Garden of the Gods)
Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
Buena Vista
Aspen (the back route--appears to be SR82--was gorgeous)
Carbondale
Boulder
Fort Collins (Rocky Mountain NP)
Denver
