I wouldn't bother buying special shoes. The last
few times I have flown, everyone was asked to take
their shoes off before going through the detector.
On a side note, sometimes those security people
are a little too aggressive. A few years ago, my
75-year-old mother (who uses a cane), had to put
the cane through the x-ray machine
(understandable), but after she went through the
detector, they made her stand on one foot at a
time, leaning against a wall while they scanned
her shoes with the wand. She almost lost her
balance several times. All the while, security
ignored my pleas to let her have her cane or sit down.
