Subject: Road into Yosemite re-opened. Posted on: Tue, 17 May 2005 19:42:29 +0000 (UTC)

Roads into Yosemite Valley which had been closed due to flooding were
reopened Tuesday morning, park officials said.

Warm weather and an unusually large, melting snowpack had caused heavy
flooding of the Yosemite Valley floor Monday, cutting off access into
the park.

At its highest point, water levels rose to about 11 feet, 6 inches in
Yosemite Valley Monday afternoon.

An initial evaluation showed the roadways were not damaged by the quick
flood.

Some campgrounds, parking areas, and lodging facilities were affected
by the water.

Sites which weren't damaged will open on Tuesday. Rangers recommend
campers with reservations call for information before driving into the
park.

Other parts of the park have remained open, including the Wawona area
and areas accessible along Highway 120 heading west, including Big Oak
Flat and the Merced and Tuolomne Groves of Giant Sequoias.
