I do feel guilty about not eating everything on my plate too, and
I wasn't alive during the Depression. But my parents came from a
background where food was not plentiful.
I still think it is best not to waste food if you can avoid it.
The solution about ordering one plate and sharing is a good one.
And maybe order an appetizer to go with it. When I go out with my
mother, we do that some times.
