From my experiences in the US, portions tend to be larger when the quality is
lower. Some people seem to consider huge portions to be good value when going
out. On my trips to France I have been surprised as the size of the portions.
At one restaurant and Verdon we ordered a three course meal and were stuffed by
the time we got through our appetizers. For instance, my wife ordered the
shrimp and avocado salad expecting to get half an avocado with some shrimp salad
inside, like we would get here. What arrived at the table was a huge pile od
shrimp salad garnished with more than a dozen shrimp in the shell and at least
one large whole avocado. The main course was huge sirloin strip steaks, and
they were accompanied by enough fresh green beans for four people.

Holland also tended to have large portions. At one restaurant in which we ate my
salmon fillet was 3-4 times the size of a typical restaurant portion here. In
Germany I rarely managed more than half of what was served to me.

I have no problem sending back uneaten food. I jut make sure that i eat the good
stuff and try to make sure that the stuff that goes back is the cheap filler :-)
