Tacky? The only tacky thing is those restaurants that charge a "plate
sharing" fee.
We share quite often. Waitresses that bring the extra plate without asking
and/or bring the biggest piece of pie when sharing the dessert get an extra
tip. Restaurants in most cases understand that the portions are large and so
expect to provide boxes for takeout. However, if the food is not the
reheatable type or you are at a hotel with no cooling/heating facilities,
telling the waiter you wish to share is not unreasonable.
Some alternatives:
Appetizer and an entree shared.
Appetizer and dessert
Keep it cool in a cooler overnight with the free ice at the hotel (something
that doesn't exist in Europe) and then reheating it in the microwave
provided in the "continental breakfast" area.
