Restaurant portions are a real problem espeically in the US. The percent of
food money spent at restaurants is growing every year. At restaurants you
may not be able to control the portion size and the trend is to offer more
and more food. While restaurants may charge for (or discourage) sharing
entrees, they encourage sharing for appetizers and desserts (a restaurant
web site teaches the wait staff how to "suggestively" sell these by saying
"if you don't want a whole one why don't you share?").
The point is that restaurants are in the business of selling as much food as
possible to you. Most people when faced with a lot of food will eat much
more than they intended and there are numerous detailed studies that back
this up.
Bottom line: you will have to look out for your own welfare and weight
control at a restaurant and you should do whatever it takes to accomplish
that -- sharing being one of the very best ideas.
And BTW a lot of very intelligent people are overweight.
