If your trip is locked in and you are willing to lose flexibility you
might try hotwire or priceline.

There are a couple of sites with information and suggestions that you
might read. It is a bit scary to not know what you are paying for but
the quality should be a good bit above a hostel and the rate experience
appears to fit.

should give you some ideas. With Priceline or Hotwire you do have to
commit to a price before you actually know the property but they often
do very well.
