Hmmm....I can't remember where we stayed right off the bat, but I can
look. The drive down to Skagway is truly spectacular...it's by far the
best for scenery and pictures; the mountains are high and there are
several beautiful lakes. You can also take the train, but then you
can't stop for pictures. Skagway is a fun place too, although it may be
shutting down by September. I don't remember the drive between
Whitehorse and Dawson City as well...it's not as scenic though, except
for where there was a fire years ago...it's quite interesting because it
hasn't recovered much. Dawson City is really fun too...we loved it.
There are lots of things to do in Dawson City...the tours that show how
they mined for gold were really fun, and you can go for a cruise on the
Yukon River...the scenery there was great too....lots of undisturbed
wilderness. I wish we had had more time in Whitehorse.

The roads were all very modern and paved. I don't know about the
weather in September, but I'm sure it's starting to get cooler. Dawson
City was our warmest day when we were there in July! If I remember
right, it is pretty breezy in Skagway. I'd definitely plan for pants
and jackets everywhere.

There is a wildlife refuge near Whitehorse you can drive
through...however, you don't get real "wildlife" pictures as there are
fences you must take pictures through. I don't remember seeing tons of
wildlife anywhere around there...but since it is the Yukon..you never know!

If I think of anything I'll let you know. :-)

We are proposing to fly into Whitehorse in early September and drive
up to Dawson and back, possibly down as far as Skagway in a week, and
spend the second week on Vancouver island.

Any tips on car rental, driving conditions, weather, accommodation and
especially wildlife/photography spots would be most welcome.

It should be quite different from little old Ireland!

Many thanks,

Richard.
