Thanks to all for your advice. My friend did the logical thing and made
reservations at Canyon campground. Since they have 2 cars / 4 adult + 9
kids, that was a good idea.

I told him how I once rented a cabin there, on a snowy night. He said,
"Snow? In the summer?" :-)

We talked further...
"Do you have camping gear?"
"Sure, tents, sleeping bags, etc."
"How are you going to cook?"
"Well, they have electricity in the campsites, right?"
"Uhm, I don't think so. Do you have some kind of electric hot plate?"
"Well, for the rice cooker."

Oh well, life is a learning experience...
