But rental car companies that rent in New York State often have
different policies than the same rental car companies in a different
state, due to state laws. New York State laws forbid rental car
companies from "age discrimination", and states that the rental car
companies MUST rent to those 18-24 years old. The rental companies
therefore take on a lot more risk, because they cant do what they do in
other states and just rent to 25 and up, or 21 and up with a reasonable
young renter fee. Therefore, they have to tack on a pretty hefty young
renters fee for all young renters, regardless of if you are 18-20 or
21-24. Additionally, they make you jump through hoops in order to rent
sometimes....like making you get pre-approved, you have to have
reservations x-number of days in advance (no walk-ups), etc. In
otherwords, New York stance on age discrimination for rental cars
pretty much screws the very people it was trying to help.
