History tends to be around San Jacinto in the spring. For cultural
check the web sites of the Opera, Symphony, Alley Theater or look for
smaller groups. You might see if there is something at one of the music
schools.

My prime suggestion is the Menill museum and especially an hour or so
staring at the black on black paintings in the Rothko chapel near the
museum. They also have a nice mosaic chapel from the med. Actually
they have it on loan but it is there for a while.

Public transport will be a bummer except from downtown to the medical
center. Since you don't want an operation I would suggest that you try
to stay on the west side near the Galleria shopping mall. It can soak
up as much time and money as you like. Transport is not particularly
efficient but a day pass in only $2 per person for the central area.

For somewhere like NASA I would suggest a tour.

Alas you will pay the sales tax. Think of it as an after VAT. Stuff
should still be cheaper than comparable situations in the UK. To skip
the tax you have to shop in New Orleans.
