I got the impression that the original poster is more interested in
20th century architecture, although I might be misunderstanding. But I
agree the French Quarter and Garden District have a lot of interesting
architecture, as do the plantations.
Tours are available of all those areas, although some tours are more
focused on architecture than others.
I'd recommend the New Orleans tours by Friends of the Cabildo, which is
a non-profit group associated with the Cabildo museum. They have
licensed guides and their tours focus on history and architecture. I've
taken several of their tours and thought they were great. And since
they are associated with the museum, many of their guides have a
particular interest in art and architecture. You'll find them at:

(Note: although their home page's title is "French Quarter Tours" ,
they also have tours of the Garden District and planatations.)
