They want to hear your voice to see if you have an accent or if you are
nervous or acting weird.

Once after a long trip I was feeling and looking pretty haggard (quite
unlike the handsome figure on my passport photo :) and my wife handed
the agent the passports while I stood there mute and downtrodden. He
looked at the photo and said "what happened to your mustache?" I said
"turned white ... made me look old ... shaved that sucker off" ... he
laughed and passed us thru.

They are just doing their jobs. Treat it as part of the fun and games
of international travel, at least until they take you into the back
room for a strip search :)
